About the Author

Philip Lawler, the founder of the Catholic World News service, is the author of The Faithful Departed, which the late Father Richard Neuhaus described in 2008 as “the best book-length treatment of the sex abuse crisis, its origins and larger implications, published to date.” More recently he wrote Lost Shepherd, a critical analysis of Pope Francis’ leadership. With The Smoke of Satan he completes his analysis of the crisis of confidence in the Church and explains how an engaged and determined laity can help trigger worldwide Catholic revival.

Phil Lawler of Catholic Culture, the former editor of Catholic World Report and veteran journalist, has come out with another timely book. He has previously written the Faithful Departed abouthis Boston Archdiocese and at the beginning of this year released Lost Shepherd, a critical reflectionon Pope Francis. Now he has The Smoke of Satan, a title that makes reference to Paul VI's reactionto the crisis after Vatican II that the Church had been infiltrated by harmful elements, not from theoutside but from within. The title is provocative, maybe even more than Dictator Pope, and not inaccurate, but the bookis not all negative. But we have to begin with acknowledging the situation, just as the individualhas to acknowledge his sin. The director of TAN publishing said it's one of the hardest books hisfamily has ever had to publish, but it's necessary.Lawler has reflected extensively on the 2002 crisis, but it has blown up again in the summer andfall of 2018. First there was the resignation of Cardinal McCarrick, the retired archbishop ofWashington, due to an accusation that he abused a minor when he was a young priest inNew York. But after that came out, it was revealed that "everybody knew" of his misconductwith adults and harassment of seminarians at his beach house as an Archbishop who wasresponsible for their future and their prospects of getting ordained. This was in June andJuly. In August, there was the Pennsylvania grand jury report on the abuse in six of the eightdioceses, the largest being PIttsburgh. Although the cases were mostly from decades ago,the details were shocking and provoked an even greater reaction among laity than theevents of 2002 in Boston and elsewhere. Then at the end of August, Archbishop Viganotestified that Pope Francis and many Cardinals and bishops including the Roman Curiawere well aware of the McCarrick case and continued to promote him. Vigano himselfinformed Pope Francis in 2013. Three secretaries of state are involved-Sodano, Bertoneand Parolin, and the timeframe covers the papacies of John Paul, Benedict and Francis.Lawler gives an evenhanded analysis of Vigano's report, noting its apparent inconsistenciesbut eventually finding them consistent with how Pope Francis, Pope Benedict and CardinalMcCarrick operated in other contexts. For instance, Benedict imposed sanctions on Fr. MarcialMaciel privately at first. McCarrick didn't cooperate honestly with Cardinal Ratzinger's directiveson pro abortion politicians, etc.All that happened in the last five months. Lawler now looks at the bigger picture, the crisisof the past half century, which he's already looked at in previous books. Since Vatican IIthere's been a failure in many bishops, priests, schools, universities, nuns, to teach theCatholic faith and to celebrate liturgy reverently. This is especially the case in the areaof sexual morality, where the majority practice birth control and still remain in the Church. The problem isn't that we're sinners, but that there's no sense of sin at all among many ofthe people, and bishops and priests have failed to challenge. There also is a sense ofhoping for the most innocent explanation, e.g. if a couple is living together maybe they'rein separate apartments, or the priest just stumbled into a gay bar for some other reason. But after the experience of all these years, this naivete has been harmful. Keeping quietabout one's fellow clerics is indeed clericalism, but also fits into this laxity. In more recentyears, this has gone to a new level with the LGBT agenda, embraced by many Catholicinstitutions, most recently Fr. James Martin. Sex is disconnected not only from havingchildren but from the differences of male and female. Then the transgender agendaredefines the sense of being male and female at all and disconnects it from our biology.Oddly, the progressives who claim to support science are not in touch with biology here.By the 2018 definition of antigay bigotry, that right wing reactionary Barack Obama wasn'tenlightened until around early 2012-good thing he had a conversion in office! It's onething if secular society is nuts, but this is being supported by leaders in the Churchand it's not what Christianity has been for 2000 years. The end of the book might be described as a Benedict Option, and though Rod Dreherisn't named he's probably pleased with it. The laity need to find parishes that arereverent in liturgy and teach the truth about faith and morals. Then they need tobuild the practices, adoration etc. that will strengthen the family and youth life.Lawler's references provide a strong resource for delving into the riches of Catholictradition. Just follow the names he drops, lots of Ratzinger, Fulton Sheen, Dietrichvon Hildebrand, Eamon Duffy, Thomas Day, Remi Brague, George Weigel, Ralph Martin,George Rutler in the forward. Even the nonbeliever Camille Paglia is mentioned in herartistic appreciation for the riches of Catholic tradition. In terms of American history,John and Abigail Adams are always inspiring, and even though he didn't like Catholicismhe admired and respected its beauty and majesty. The book has the advantage of being brief (unlike me!) and coming out justmonths after the events that it responds to. However, it is both current andapplicable to the broader crisis of the past 50 years. Lawler has already spokenhis piece on Pope Francis, so this book doesn't dwell on him, and is not onlynegative but positive in showing some of the evangelistic impulses of Bergoglio.

Lawler calmly, and with a precise and orderly report, takes down the Catholic hierarchy. Like a religious wreck from which you cannot look away. If enough Catholics read this, it is hard to fathom how the bishops in the United States can survive this exposure. This book should start a revolution. I pray it will for the survival of Holy Mother Church. God bless Philip Lawler for his courage to write this and may God protect him.

Although written quickly in order to respond to contemporary events (he makes reference to events occurring in the past month), Lawler's book reads like it was the product of decades of work. I would recommend this book to any Catholic. It presents a clear and compelling diagnosis of the problems in the Church (as well as the broader society) and a useful prescription for bringing Her back to health.

I cannot say enough good things about Phil Lawler's "The Smoke of Satan: How Corrupt and Cowardly Bishops Betrayed Christ, His Church, and the Faithful…and What Can Be Done About It." He very succinctly describes the disaster in which our Church finds itself, explains how we reached this odious place, and offers possible solutions to correct the situation, things that we the laity can do. I read the Kindle edition, but I plan to order the print edition--several copies, in fact. This will be my Christmas gift to friends.

I purchased the book to learn about the Church’s crisis, its roots, and the bishops’ role throughout the unfortunate turns in events. While Lawler addresses these points, about 1/3 of the book is spent discussing the broader issue of the Church and culture. It’s interesting and informative, but the author would have done his book and its readers a service by explaining the role of the clergy (or lack thereof) in the post-Vatican II Church. Some connections are made, but as it stands, it could almost be a stand-alone commentary on cultural shifts inside and outside the Church. Which would be fine, but title of the book makes it sound like it exclusively discusses the scandal as it pertains to priests and bishops. A few clarifying points, either in the title or in the body of text, would have aided in guiding the overall narrative arc.Overall, though, this book was an excellent summary and source of information on how we got to where we are, and ends on a genuinely uplifting note about what the laity can do. It’s part documentary, part call-to-arms, and entirely readable for the average lay Catholic. Absolutely recommend.

A great follow-up to Lost Shepherd by same author. This book has a different, but related, topic. I found myself examining my conscience as I read. There are challenges here for those of us who are concerned by the present crisis and want genuine reforms in the Church because we love Her.

The author paints a dire picture of the situation in the US church. It well, unfortunately, might be so. Throughout the book, I got the sense that this gifted apologist is significantly irked by the fact that things are not going they way he knows and thinks they should be going. In other words, his understanding is the point of reference, not something objective outside of him (though objectivity and honesty are themes he treats in the book). What raised my eyebrows was the use of EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) as a model of how non-hierarchical initiatives can testify to John 3:8. Granted, good things happen at EWTN but this smacked of an impartiality and dishonesty insofar as EWTN is now remembered for an interview with you-know-who before the last US presidential elections. It reads like a book written for the purpose of increasing the depth and magnitude of an existing polarization in a relativized society. I've learnt to be wary of books with long and catchy titles. Clickbait is real.

The book is a good summarization of the problems today. The list of do’s and dont’s offers food for thought but nothing original.
