I really think DC could have chosen better stories and a nice cover gallery would have been nice. WW should have been better served.
I don't usually write reviews, but I'm enjoying this book so much that I wanted to go ahead and toss in my 2 cents on this one. First, I'd like to point out that despite my age, I'm new to superhero comic books. As a young boy back in the 70s, I preferred to spend my hard earned allowance on the humor mags such as Mad, Crazy and Cracked rather than comic books.Not shockingly, my late interest in comic books stems from the plethora of Marvel/DC/etc. superhero movies that have been released over the past 10+ years. Specifically, in regard to this review for Wonder Woman: A Celebration of 75 Years, I'm absolutely (at the time of writing this) looking forward to the imminent release of the Wonder Woman (2017) movie. In anticipation of that, I became curious about Wonder Woman's origin story, and knowing absolutely nothing whatsoever about the history of the character or her astoundingly long lived comic book run (compared with every other superhero in existence), I searched "Wonder Woman" on Amazon.com, and this book was near the top of the result list.I never buy anything without extensively researching it first, hemming and hawing, and then finally making a decision after much mental debate. The other positive reviews did help, particularly the one by HotPinkSubs. It is noted by other reviewers that this book is a general overview, and not a comprehensive one (i.e., it omits significant chunks of WW's overall continuity). Given what I've learned over the past month (beyond the material presented in this book), it would be impossible to provide an all-inclusive overview of Wonder Woman in the 300 pages contained in this book (probably 1000 pages wouldn't be sufficient for that). My observation is that the intent of this book is to (at a low price for a nice hardbound edition) include what are probably considered to be the most relevant "milestone" Wonder Woman stories, starting with her introduction by William Moulton Marston (in All-star Comics #8) at the onset of the "Golden Age" of superhero comics. For someone like myself (i.e., a comic book newbie), this really has been an ideal introduction to Wonder Woman. For someone who is well versed in Wonder Woman and/or has already collected many of her comics, this might be a nice book to have, but is probably material you are already familiar with or have otherwise collected. The table of contents is readily viewable in the "Look inside" if you are wondering what comic books/stories are included.Admittedly, I'm only half way through the book, but I already can say that this purchase was emphatically worth every penny I paid. Given the vast number of writers and illustrators who have penned the Wonder Woman stories over the past 75 years, this book has provided the concise yet broad swathed overview that I needed to be able to pinpoint the writers/artists/stories that are most appealing to me. For example, I had no idea there was such a thing as the "Diana Prince" era, and given Wonder Woman loses her costume and powers, I undoubtedly would have written that story arc off as not being of interest to me. However, after reading issues #179 & #204, which are included in this collection, much to my surprise I found this spy/secret agent version of Wonder Woman to be intriguing.That said, being most fascinated by the original Marston & Peters Wonder Woman, I've already purchased Wonder Woman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1, but I'm definitely looking forward to reading the more modern stories collected in the second half of A Celebration of 75 Years, because having already browsed the remainder of the book, it's obvious to me that there are certainly going to be more writers and illustrators whose work on Wonder Woman I find to be appealing. Notably, in regard to the broader DC publications Celebration of XX Years series, I'm also figuring on purchasing Catwoman: A Celebration of 75 Years, and venturing down that path as well…In a nutshell, this book has been an ideal introduction to Wonder Woman for someone who previously had absolutely no knowledge at all about the comic book character (aside from what was portrayed in the Lynda Carter television series that I watched religiously back when it originally aired). In this regard, Wonder Woman: A Celebration of 75 Years has served outstandingly well as a relatively inexpensive way to get acquainted with the vast universe of stories about the amazing Amazon who wears the golden tiara and red, white and blue costume.
This is an absolute must for Wonder Woman fans! It's nicely put together and gives you the ability to explore her rather interesting history. While the likes of Batman and Superman just have certain charms or a classic nature about them, her original creator was rather, er, interesting in a very peculiar way and I found reading it honestly weird but mesmerizing, regardless the wordy nature and crude art. But that's only the first part of the book. The volume divides the issues (for numbers see the Amazon's description ) into four parts. I is The Amazon (1941-1957). II is The Princess (1958-1986). III The Ambassador (1986-2010). And finally IV: The Warrior (2011-PRESENT).All are nicely put together and give a brief history of Wonder Woman. My only regret is that this book does not showcase her past 2014, so we do not have an issue with her latest reincarnation, inspired by the movie-verse. It is this most recent outfit that I love the most. But I will not fault the book on that, when it gives us so rich a history and look into one of the most changing of superheroines. They were even so gracious as to put a stamp at the bottom of the table of contents, pointing out the earlier issues were not altered or changed because they reflect the world at that point in time.All in all, I consider this a must for fans or people who want to learn about Wonder Woman and see how she's changed through the years.
This a good overview of Wonder Woman's history, though it is more of an introduction for the new reader who wants to get a general idea of Wonder Woman stories throughout the ages. Especially some earlier stories. It goes through different periods of her history, from her beginnings, to the George Perez "Post-Crisis" reboot, to the New 52. Even her "Diana Prince" mod era. It does skip the era of "One Year Later" (2006), (known for such things as art by Terry Dodson and storylines by Gail Simone.) As well as the suit change controversy of 2010. (It actually skips a lot of her recent history from 2004-2012.) It also skips the impact of Wonder Woman with the Justice League (such as the Infinite Crisis/Maxwell Lord storylines). Not comprehensive, but a broad look at different phases of Wonder Woman's life in the comics to commemorate her 75th anniversary.
When I was a kid in the 70's I got my first taste of WW with the Linda Carter TV series_ WoW - what a Woman !! She was responsible for me hitting an early puberty_ My mom wondered why we were running out of baby oil so fast_ it's still my secret to this day ! LolOh yes, the Book ! ....oh yeah, yeah, that's all good_ nice catch up on the character_ I love the old style Comic Art so much better than todays_ they actually had to draw them back then_ I think these days the computers pretty much draw the art....or at least it seems like that's what's taking place as the newer art all looks so similar to me_ Would make a good Coffee Table book
A great overview of Wonder Woman. Who knew there were that many artistic views of Wonder Woman over the years (most fans probably knew that. I did not, but am happy to learn!). Inspired me to purchase more Wonder Woman books and USPS Wonder Woman stamps, which I love to use on my mail!
This book is exactly what I expected of it, an anthology of stories that trace the evolution of the character over the years since her original debut, both in terms of art and story. It is as much a history of the country during those years as it is of a comic book character.
Nice book with the history of this character. Good read for fans and the like.
This book does an excellent job of giving readers a flavor of how Wonder Woman has been depicted in her many incarnations. Do keep in mind that this book only gives a view of a comic book or two from each incarnation, so most cover only the smallest part of any story arc.
