Ok, I haven’t read that many books about buying and running a dental office but this is way beyond my expectation. It literally covers the entire process of dental office transition and beyond. Even if you one is not buying an office, I feel that it would help to understand the components and economics in the dental office that we run everyday.We are lost in it sometimes and I think the book helps us to regain direction and footing, the basics and beyond. The human underneath I’m writhing the book is very genuine. I like it a lot. I really think that this should be a dental school textbook. It’s a must read for dentists in any stage of their professional life.
If you are even considering the idea of buying a practice, BUY THIS BOOK FIRST. And then, CALL BRIAN!Once I made the decision that I was ready to buy a practice, I was beyond lost and intimidated by the listings and valuations. I started to do some research and came across this book. I was able to eliminate two practices in no time just off his valuable metrics and insight. I raved about his book and his methods for practice selection to all my dental colleagues because this small book had already saved me major hassles and a potential fatal practice transaction. Once I started communicating with a broker of a practice, I still felt like I needed a strong advocate on my end of the deal. Sure, brokers are the middle man and try and help the transaction, but they are hired by the seller and they are motivated to finish the sale. Nonetheless, I emailed Brian on a whim unsure if he would be available. He responded within a few hours and in no time I was able to talk to him about a practice and he had already drafted up a pros and cons list based on valuation metrics. He's a straight shooter and he will give you a no hold back honest opinion of what you are looking at and really tries to ensure it's the best fit for you moving forward. He is helping every step of the way and he has a great relationship with many other dental advocates you will need throughout the whole transition (accountants, lawyers, and even brokers).Dental colleagues...you do not have to do this transition alone! And you shouldn't! Best of luck to others out there who are in the same position as myself but if nothing else, do your research beforehand and read this book for some great insight!
Brian is a wonderful writer, this was an enjoyable read. During the read you will learn valuable nuggets of wisdom. He comes across as wise and unbiased in educating a prospective buyer. Some of his advice is counterculture and I appreciated the different perspective.He plugs in his services often in the book and I didn't view it as a bad thing, especially if you are anyways looking to hire professional help. Almost all books you will read on this topic are nothing more than marketing material for the authors services but Brian tried to be very subtle about it.
Of the many dental transition books I've read, this is leaps ahead of the rest. Clear, concise, and up to date. Of course other sources have differences of opinions, so be prepared for that. But this book was for sure the most thorough and objective.
This is a must read for anyone new to the transition aspect of dentistry like myself who wishes to purchase a dental practice. It's easy to read, yet is thorough. I turned this book into an one-page checklist and bring it with me every time I visit a potential seller of practice. I feel great after meeting with the seller, knowing I covered all the bases. I even had the honor of emailing the author for more advice, which he gave without hesitance. The book is worth its weight in gold.

While anyone can find random tips and snippets of advice while searching on the internet, you really need a book like this that presents all of the details in a cohesive step-by-step process.Brian relies on hard data for his quantitative analysis of a dental practice, which is worth a thousand "opinions" of individuals who have gone through the process themselves but have nothing to compare their own experience to. It's evident that Brian has done this dozens (maybe hundreds?) of times for his clients, and here we get his vast wisdom distilled into the palm of your hand.This book is good for reading all the way through as a means of getting a birds-eye view of the practice buying process. I'm sure it's even more useful as a reference and checklist for when you are actually going through the process yourself, so don't just read it once and forget it.A book like this is probably one of the best investments you can make (assuming you read it, of course). Brian's knowledge and experience with helping dentists buy dental practices can be yours, for only a few bucks and a few hours of your time. And you won't get this kind of advice and perspective by talking to a dentist who has done this at most a handful of times in his career.
I specialize in dental practice transitions and I have never seen one place where it discusses step by step "paths" for a buyer to follow. This is an excellent resource for any potential buyer needing a excellent resource to know not only what to expect going through the process but maximize the chances of a smooth transition. I have been intimately involved in countless transitions in my career , and I can confidently recommend this resource as a trusted source and great material!
The book is separated into five sections, each covering one major aspect of buying a dental practice - from before to after the actual purchase. Each section takes the major milestones and breaks down what to watch for, what to avoid and how to navigate that particular area. I found the book easy to follow and helpful. I would still hire a competent advisor for a purchase (and the author recommends as much) but a determined do-it-yourselfer could get pretty far with this book alone.
