This book is definitely the most comprehensive round-the-world travel book available. I have read them all. It is thick! And has in depth chapters about RTW flights, how to navigate most regions of the world, as well as plenty of quick tips for saving money and staying safe. I have recommended it to many people.
I thought this book was extremely helpful to any international traveler who believes in getting the best deal for their travel dollar. Edward Hasbrouck, who has assisted me and other such travelers with his online columns for many years and is a true expert testifying on behalf of traveler's rights around the globe, shares his knowledge with us about every aspect of online international travel. Although this book is 9 years old, I found the information on travel consolidators, which I knew little about, to be particularly interesting. I had been a travel agent specializing in international routes and airfares for 3 years so the discussion of the various airline CRS systems (Worldspan, Sabre, etc.) was also particularly interesting to me. Hasbrouck provides a lot of his own conclusions about what works and what doesn't work and how to determine optimization from the viewpoint of the traveler. This is a very good book worth the several hours it takes to read it. I recommend that if you find a section of no interest when reading it, just skip it and move on.
Great Book, packed full of information, thick book, small print, lots of fine, recent info. Makes me want to take off. Very happy I got it, would recommend to a friend. Has so much information, I'm still reading it, but have read enough to know that it's the real deal. Very practical, as the title says!

This book is exhaustive to the point of being exhausting - and as such isn't really useful for anyone who's traveled at least once overseas. The book is divided into sections on choosing destinations, surface transportation (100 pages!), air transportion (140 pages!), travel docs, safety and health, baggage, practicalities, the bottom line, and resources. Some of the information was useful - such on how to take advantage of open jaw airline tickets - but so much of it is a rehash of what every traveler knows. I mean, I didn't need to pay $22 to learn that I should use a credit card when making travel plans.For the novice - anyone else, pass on this one.
This book has some great tips about long term travel and ways to accomplish it. The tips are pretty great.
When I gave this book to my granddaughter she was happy with it and plans to use it when traveling during her summer break
This book is an encyclopedia of travel including a lengthy discussion of how the travel industry operates. However, the specifics on how to travel around the world are only covered superficially. After reading this book and the Rough Guide equivalent, one may conclude that the definitive book on around-the-world travel has yet to be researched and written.
