The March snow storms cost my AP English Language and Comp class a lot of time. With the exam just a month away I was becoming very worried. But no more! This book absolutely covers every major exam topic. Ms. Meltzer's explanations are clear and her examples are just like the ones on the College Board practice materials. I especially like her chapters explaining and illustrating the synthesis, rhetorical, and argument essays. The sample essays and critiques helped me understand how the graders approach an essay. Ms. Meltzer's book is totally up-to-date on recent changes in the exam. For example her chapter on Rhetorical Strategies notes that the test writers no longer ask students to identify antithesis, metonymy, and apostrophe. Instead, they focus on hyperbole, paradox, parallel structure and other more common rhetorical devices. Ms. Meltzer provides clear and concise definitions and examples for each terms. I strongly recommend this book for anyone preparing for the AP English Language and Comp exam! It arrived just in time!
Some people think you can't really study/prepare for the AP Lang & AP Lit exams, but I've found that you definitely can if you have good materials that really align with the tests. Since the College Board doesn't release much official stuff for AP exams, I had been struggling to find materials or review books to recommend to my students for AP Lang & Comp. But now the struggle is over thanks to Erica Meltzer's new book!I've been using Ms. Meltzer's ACT/SAT grammar and reading books with my students for years now and I am a big fan! (The results my students achieve support my own enthusiasm.) And now with this new AP Lang & Comp. book, I can say that she's hit another home run! I've used it with with several of my students so far and not only did I find this book incredibly useful to me in preparing materials for my students, but they found the book really helpful to use between sessions. My students especially liked the glossary of rhetorical terms, the chapter on rhetorical strategies, and the sections on the synthesis and rhetorical essays. Having real essay samples with some excellent "how to" guidance helped my students better grasp the task and improve their work.I would highly recommend this book to students, teachers, and tutors.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. This book was a big help to my 11th grade son, whose AP English class surprisingly did not spend any time going over the format of the test and what to expect. Ms Meltzer clearly explains each type of question and what the testers are looking for. She also explains the essays and how to answer them. The text is very thorough. I would have liked to see some graphic design that would break up long sections to be more visually appealing, but the meat of the book is beneficial, and that's what a student needs when the possibility of tuition savings is on the line.
This review is for Erica Meltzer’s The Critical Reader: AP English Language and Composition Edition by my daughter, who received a free copy through the giveaway.---------------------------------------------Organization-wise, The Critical Reader breaks the APELC test into the reading (multiple choice) and essay sections: each is covered comprehensively and in great detail.*** Multiple Choice: First, the Reading section devotes one chapter to each type of multiple choice question. It gives specific, effective strategies for dealing with each question type and includes high-quality, realistic passages with guided example questions.These guided example questions are, in my opinion, one of the best parts of the book. Reading through the examples and the guided answers that follow has helped me learn how to think about the questions and understand why the answer is what it is. There were enough guided examples for me to feel comfortable with the strategies presented in each chapter. Doing the practice questions at the end of the chapter mainly helped me practice applying the strategies, and reading the answer explanations at the very end helped me to fill gaps in my understanding and application of the strategies.I’d say that the second most valuable aspect of this book is that it taught me how to read passages for understanding beyond literal meaning. A lot of times you notice transition words, specific vocabulary, or unusual punctuation in a passage, but you also need to realize how these subtleties relate to the purpose of the passage and can be used to eliminate answer choices. This is what I really like about the reading section of The Critical Reader. Before I went through this book, I always had to painstakingly debate between two very probable answers on multiple choice questions. My choice almost always ended in either my gut feeling or an arbitrary guess. Having gone through this book, the debate between two answers is much less difficult for me—I can simply go down my “checklist†of why an answer choice might be wrong and eliminate one of them. As a whole, in my experience, working through the reading section of The Critical Reader really demystifies the mentality necessary for success on the multiple choice section of the APELC exam.*** Essays: Next, the Essay section of The Critical Reader devotes one chapter to each type of essay (synthesis, rhetorical analysis, argument). It introduces effective strategies for approaching each essay type and also walks you through multiple student responses to real APELC essay prompts.With regard to the strategies for each essay, these were similar to the ones covered in my AP English class at school (e.g. for the synthesis essay, develop your own position before reading the given supplemental sources). The benefit, in my opinion, is that for the rhetorical analysis essay, The Critical Reader includes a master list of different rhetorical devices you can look for in a given passage and write about in your essay.I think the best part of this section of the book was the sentence and paragraph templates that are provided. This book doesn’t just list the steps you should take when, for example, introducing a counterargument. It also gives you concrete examples—“templatesâ€â€”of how to execute these steps while writing at an 8-9 score level.As for the overall experience, working through a small portion of this book every day was most effective toward improving my testing ability. The book contains a lot of material, so giving yourself enough time to digest all the strategies, examples, and practice questions is important.
