The other reviews for this Haggadah are glowing, so allow me to disagree.I bought several copies this Haggadah only because it had a Russian edition available on Amazon. We have some English copies and some Russian copies and used them for our family's three-generational Russian/English seder. I can honestly say that I think every one of those generations was bored by this Haggadah. The language may be gender-neutral, but it is convoluted and verbose. It was not engaging at all. The youngest at the table, who is six and absolutely loves reading and listening to stories, was completely checked out.Now I have to buy a whole new set of Haggadot.
Our family has used this Haggadah since the early 1970's. We love it. It makes the Holiday meaningful for my children and grandchildren, a great spiritual, religious, and bonding Haggadah. I was raised as a strict Orthodox Jew, but as much as I loved seders as a child, this book is more compelling than the older Maxwell House Coffee seder books. My children and grandchildren love the seder, and Christian guests have asked if they could have one of the Baskin Haggadahs, including an East German guest who grew up in Nazi Germany.
If you love the traditional order of the Passover seder, this haggadah is not for you. The initial chant that lists the stages of the seder ("kadesh urechatz") has been expunged, because indeed the redactors of this version believe that they have improved the seder by changing the ancient order. The content is also significantly altered. The Haggadah text is interpolated with modern texts in English - not only interpretations or explanations of the original Haggadah passages but also replacements and additions of new materials to the recitation. Some of these are thought-provoking but others border on the maudlin.
I love, love, love the thoughtfulness of this Haggadah as well as the beauty of the images. The stories have been reimagined in a contemporary context in a way that has no cheesiness but shares messages that make me not only excited about reading this book at my seder table, but also happy to use these messages as morals for my children.
This has been our family Haggadah for years. I love the artwork and the interpretations and readings. It is also gender neutral and has transliterations for everything.
We purchased 12 of these Haggadahs years ago. We discovered we apparently misplaced one last year and could find only 11. We have 12 people coming for Seder this year. Panic!!! But no need for panic - LevineJudaica got it to us in plenty of Time. Thank you!!!
I've used this one for years. It is family friendly.
While I like this version of the Haggadah, we needed 3 or 4 more copies for the grandkids -- unfortunately, the vendor was unable to provide them for us (guess that is/was due to the lag between the information on Amazon's website and the reality of the vendor's inventory).
