Great book for anyone wanting to teach young children, toddlers how to easily and effectively communicate their daily needs. Teaching the basic signs so effective as young babies and toddlers struggle getting their needs and wants through vocal communication. My grand son and granddaughter make our lives so much more enjoyable and peaceful now that they are using signs. So easy to learn and amazed at his children have mastered over 15 signs already Great book!##
I just loved this book. It's really simple and easily digestible, yet it's full of great information as well as signing instructions. This is for the beginner, so there aren't tons and tons of signs, but it includes the basics that you would need to get started. The drawings of the signs are pretty straightforward, and there is a description of how to do the movement of the sign under many of them.I have been signing to my son since he was just shy of 2 months old (though the book suggests to start at 4 months) and now at 3 months he is already responding to "milk," "bath," "all done," and "up." He's not signing back yet, but it's nice to see him light up when I do the signs for the things he likes! This book is also great because it uses American Sign Language, so if you want to sign a word not in the book it's pretty easy to find online.
As an ASL teacher and new grandmother, I've been looking for the perfect resource for my son and his wife to use with their new baby. After looking through MANY books, I found this one to be the BEST: Baby Signing 1 -2-3 by Nancy Cadjan. This is an EXCELLENT book, with tons of (accurate) info about ASL and Deaf culture, which I haven't seen in any other book like this. Cadjan also discusses child language development, and what kind of signing you can expect a child to understand and initiate at different age levels. The book also contains a clear ASL dictionary by content areas, which is another unique feature. This is a SUPER resource! Make sure THIS is the book you get!
The first couple of chapters are just general info but once you start reading the core of the book its an excellent guide! I started signing milk, more, change diaper, all done, and up to my daughter at two months. It was always a task changing her diaper because she would squirm around and kick but within a week of signing she would hold her feet up by herself when she saw me change her diaper and would smile when I signed all done. Also at four months she gets excited when I sin bottle and purses her lips to try and find the bottle after the sign.I cannot wait until she signs back. Just the fact that she understands is amazing. The chapters show pictures of the signs as you should start teaching them. The book is amazing.
I like that this book explains age appropriate steps for teaching your baby to sign but there aren't enough actual signs worked into the text. Instead, the signs are located in a glossary. Very inconvenient. The glossary in and of itself would be a good idea if it was organized in alphabetical order. Instead, it's organized by categories, but the categories aren't always organized in a way I'd personally use them. (For example, milk is organized under "first signs" rather than under a good category.)
I started reading this book before my first son was born. My husband and I started signing basic signs (milk, change for diaper changes, fan, light, all done, more, etc), when our son was 4 months old and started to pay attention to us. We were pleasantly shocked at 9 months when he started signing milk after a bath! From that night on the signs kept coming one after another. He had been paying attention all along and then it just clicked! We added words easily and he caught on easily. He started talking very early and as he did he dropped the signs. Now that I have an infant I've started signing from day 1! I wonder if he will catch on earlier. Even though my 2 year old doesn't sign much anymore (he still says the word please and signs it for emphasis!), he still knows the signs and is helping me with my younger son! This book is not overwhelming and is organized in an easy to understand way. In my case I do believe it has prevented tantrums caused by failure to communicate and instead has given my son the confidence to articulate his needs verbally! Great gift for an expecting parent.
This book was perfect for me. My granddaughter is non verbal and speaks in signs. This book makes the process of learning signs for special needs children very easy! Thank you!
it has a lot of different signs in it which is great, and explains why signing is helpful (as so many people i talk to think that it will hurt my child's language which is so not what has happened). our little guy doesnt use many signs anymore, but will for some words that are harder to pronounce. i really think it helped his words develop as he seems to have a lot more words than other kids his age.
