Sandra Allen’s A KIND OF MIRRACULAS PARADISE: A TRUE STORY ABOUT SCHIZOPHRENIA is eye-opening. As the author points out, schizophrenia is a disorder that many do not know much about and what they think they know is based upon fear. Fear of the unknown. Of old stigmas associated with it and of the people they think mostly fall victim to it. While she carefully describes the history of schizophrenia, the medications used to treat it, and what life inside the mind of a schizophrenic is like, some myths are dispelled. Most of all, what I gathered was that her uncle, whom the book is about, was able to tell his story through a manuscript that he shared with his niece. These pages are woven into the book along with her observations and background about her family. There is nothing sugar-coated in the book, nor would you expect it to be. Allen’s honesty about her concerns even writing it, and how those changed once she delved in, help to further understand how she was able to put herself slightly more at ease, perhaps to empathize, and get to know her Uncle Bob through his pages. If nothing else, the book gives a glimpse into a world in which few will ever know the depth of pain or misunderstanding that most of us will feel in our lifetime, but the necessary tools to find compassion for those who have a different way of processing information.

I read A Kind of Miraculous Paradise over the course of one weekend (I generally read books very slowly). I could not put it down, and had a weekend filled with joy, grief, and laughter. One of the blurbs on the back cover refers to it as an "act of radical empathy." I don't have much to add to that. Rarely (or never) have a been given the keys to a life I not only never though I'd have access to, but frankly didn't think much about before reading this book. Allen pulls you in, demanding your attention, empathy, and care. It's really incredible.

I've never read another book like this. It's the story of mental illness in America and the ways in which schizophrenics are ignored, mistreated, and forgotten alongside the firsthand account of a man experiencing mental illness himself. But it's also the story of Sandra Allen, the author, coming to terms with how mental illness has affected her family and what her "crazy" uncle's life has really been like. Read this book! You won't regret it. It's beautiful and expands your understanding of the world in important ways.

Thank you for getting Bob’s story out there. I miss my son William. William and Robert were precious and rarified with honesty.

This is the story of a man deemed to be crazy, growing up in a crazy country at a crazy time in history. I found it to be beautiful and unsettling, and not at all what I expected.

It all starts when, one day a few years ago, the author received a strange package in the mail from her uncle Bob, who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and had been living as a hermit in the desert. It was his life story, written in all caps on a typewriter, with frequent spelling errors, some ugly racial slurs, and a few passages of what appeared to be naked delusion. Bob asked her to get his story out into the world, but when Allen tried to show the manuscript to her writer friends, they recoiled (in much the same way, Allen implies, that we as a society tend to recoil from schizophrenic people in general). And so Allen decided to re-write her uncle Bob’s remarkable life story, to tell his story both from his perspective and from her own. In the process, she recounts a much wider story of many other kinds of madness: the history of student radicalism and the drug scene in Berkeley in the 1960s, the dark and often cruel history of psychiatry, and the rise of a bold new way of looking at mental health, known sometimes as Mad Pride.

As a writer, Allen has a light touch. This book touches up on questions of epistemology, moral philosophy, and identity politics, but never in a dull or preachy way. It challenges us to ask ourselves: Who’s really crazy—the people diagnosed with schizophrenia, or the society that allows them to be imprisoned, tortured, chemically lobotomized, and left to beg for pocket change on the streets? What separates a prophet from a madman, a doctor from a patient? Who gets the opportunity to tell their own story? Which stories do we view as true, stemming from an authentic inner life, and which are merely ‘delusional’? And, perhaps most importantly, how do we learn to listen to those unlike ourselves?

In the end, my mind is broader and brighter for having read this book. I look forward to seeing what this brilliant young author will write next.

First and foremost, A Kind of Mirraculas Paradise is a compelling story you will not be able to stop reading. The author describes the colorful but difficult life of Uncle Bob after he was diagnosed and treated as a schizophrenic in Northern California in the 1970s. The story is especially moving because the author provides direct insights about Uncle Bob’s mostly heartbreaking existence taken from his actual typewritten manuscript, composed over several decades. The author writes with wit, stunning metaphors, and honesty. It is also very informative, providing readers new to the subject of schizophrenia and mental illness with insightful research findings while asking many important questions about treatment.
